Typically, young people don’t respond well to being told what to do. But with Gen Z males making up a significant portion of non-recyclers, Return-It needed them to clean up their recycling habits. Our solve? A bit of light judgement from their peers using language and debatable social scenarios they can relate to.
Crushing workloads. Near-constant overtime. Staff shortages. Patients in the halls. And no help in sight. To be a nurse in British Columbia in 2022 was to step into a nightmare. BC residents needed to be reminded of the horrible conditions nurses were forced to work through, and wake up to the pressing dangers posed to our healthcare system.

After 20 years of getting the message out about the benefits of recycling, Return-It enjoyed one of the highest beverage container recycling rates in all of North America. However, research showed that there was still a segment of the population who were responsible for well over half of all containers still thrown in the trash. Return-It asked us to find a new way to engage this hard-to-persuade audience and change their recycling behaviour for the better.
Positive. Encouraging. Strong. These are the characteristics we’ve come to expect (and demand) from our nurses. But burdened under the weight of workplace violence, dire shortages and burnout, nurses in BC were speaking the truth about their realities as plainly as possible. BC needed to see not a hero nurse, but an honest one. And the truth cut deep, resulting in over 2300 people writing letters to their MLA.
